Note of Apology – August 31, 2018

Sharon DeVito

Tuesday night’s meeting was a humbling experience. I now recognize that, in doing what I thought was best, I have completely overstepped my ethical obligations as a member of the Robbinsville Board of Education.  For that, I will be forever sorry.

I want to extend my deepest apology to the staff, administration, my fellow Board members, and this community for saying and doing things that did not follow proper behavioral standards and protocol for members of the Board of Education.  As a member of the Board, I now realize that even private conversations may become open to the public for scrutiny.  I am sorry for the use of offensive language and apologize to anyone that was offended by my words.

I am also sorry that I ignored protocol for board member escalations by communicating my concerns regarding a former student and certain employees to administrators and professionals who work with the district rather than directly to our school superintendent.  I did not mean this to be perceived as I was “bullying” anyone or that I was, in any way, trying to “go around” our school superintendent – who I deeply respect and admire.   I apologize for this lapse in judgement and I commit that this will never happen again.

I am very sorry for the concern and distraction that I have caused the district and the community. As Henry Ford said “the only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.”  I can assure you I have learned an invaluable lesson.

I am human and not exempt from making mistakes.  Thank you for your understanding and forgiveness.  I am blessed to be able to serve this community and the students of Robbinsville.
